Coupled carbon and oxygen isotope model for pedogenic carbonates

چکیده
Carbon and oxygen isotope values of ancient pedogenic carbonates reflect the paleoenvironmental conditions under which formed. are commonly used to reconstruct pCO2, C3 vs. C4 plant types, carbon cycle dynamics. Oxygen same have been past temperatures elevations. In geologic record, changes in these can be difficult interpret because they affected by a suite multiple local (e.g. precipitation temperature) global variables pCO2 that separate. this study, we develop semi-mechanistic model factors affect carbonate. The links common environmental using theoretical empirical relationships. We test optimize modern data compilation carbonate measurements. This comparison indicates best reproduces observed when assumed form where (1) evaporation affects source waters at shallow soil depths only, (2) mix from prior during period formation, (3) CO2 respiration rates anomalously low. Global predictions optimized suggest strong spatial variation both highlight areas future measurements samples might provide tests model. also demonstrates coherent patterns coupled ?13Ccarbonate ?18Ocarbonate value associated with different types forcing, offers new framework for interpreting paired constrain change.

Paleoelevation Reconstruction using Pedogenic Carbonates
Paleoelevation reconstruction using stable isotopes, although a relatively new science, is making a signifi cant contribution to our understanding of the recent growth of the world’s major orogens. In this review we examine the use of both light stable isotopes of oxygen and the new “clumped-isotope” (Δ47) carbonate thermometer in carbonates from soils. Globally, the oxygen isotopic composition...
متن کاملCarbon and oxygen isotope geochemistry of Ediacaran outer platform carbonates, Paraguay Belt, central Brazil
After the late Cryogenian glaciation the central region of Brazil was the site of extensive deposition of platformal carbonates of the Araras Group. This group includes a basal cap carbonate sequence succeeded by transgressive, deep platform deposits of bituminous lime mudstone and shale. Facies and stratigraphic data combined with carbon and oxygen isotopic analyses of the most complete sectio...
متن کاملThe stable carbon isotope composition of soil organic carbon and pedogenic carbonates along a bioclimatic gradient in the Palouse region, Washington State, USA
Isotopic signatures of soil components are commonly used to infer past ecologic and climatic shifts in the soil record. The theory behind the fractionation of isotopes that occurs during ecosystem processes is well understood; however, few isotopic studies have explored ecosystem relationships in modern soils. We discuss relationships of stable carbon isotopic signatures in plant tissue, soil o...
متن کاملOxygen isotope ratios in Holocene carbonates across a climatic gradient, eastern Washington State, USA: Evidence for seasonal effects on pedogenic mineral isotopic composition
Oxygen isotope ratios of pedogenic carbonates were analyzed along a climatic gradient in the Palouse region of eastern Washington State to evaluate changes in their isotopic composition with changing climate. A modern analog approach was used to assess the relationship between the istotope ratios in the pedogenic carbonates with those in soil water (measured in June when we anticipated carbonat...
متن کاملOxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions of Permian pedogenic phyllosilicates: Development of modern surface domain arrays and implications for paleotemperature reconstructions
Mineralogic, chemical, and oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions of 15 different phyllosilicate samples from Permo– Pennsylvanian-age paleosols of the eastern shelf of the Midland basin of Texas and the southern Anadarko basin are presented. Mixtures of 2 :1 phyllosilicates and kaolinite dominate most samples, although some samples consist of relatively pure 2 :1 phyllosilicates. Chemical an...
